New FIRST Teams

In 2011, PlanetPTC Live attendees donated money to help establish new FIRST teams in the Las Vegas area through the local chapter of the After School All-Stars Las Vegas. As a result of these gifts and matching donations by PTC, $20,000 was given to FIRST at the event to help support future engineers.

New FIRST teams established with PlanetPTC Live 2011 donations

Below are some of the experiences of participants at Jim Bridger Middle School. The Bridger Middle School Falcons was one of the teams established with donations from the 2011 PlanetPTC Live event. This team participated in the Southern Nevada FIRST® LEGO® League Championship Tournament (ages 9-14) in December 2011 and received the Gracious Professionalism™ award.

"My favorite part of the robotics team was being able to work together as a team and win awards together … When I spoke in front of judges at the FIRST Lego League championship tournament, I didn’t have stage fright. The Lego robotics team at Jim Bridger Middle School has really given me a lot to think about when I am doing something in public. Without After School All-Stars, I would not be able to learn the things I have learned here in robotics. After School All-Stars can really teach students valuable lessons, so can you please do this again next year?"

"My favorite part of being on the robotics team was absolutely everything. I loved the experience, and will treasure it forever. I will remember our constant disagreeing, but unusually getting along. Being truthful, I don’t think we really liked each other in the beginning. But now we are closer, like a family ... I will miss the team because I love the ability to express my creativity with everyone else. Being on a robotics team has made a difference in my life because it changes my view on life. Now I am stronger and more patient around people. Robotics also allowed me to think deeper, and more clearly. I am grateful to be able to do this, and hopefully I can do it again next year. Thank you so much for everything you have allowed us to do."

"My favorite part of robotics team was that I was able to make new friends and get to know robotics. Robotics helped me to work in a team with other students. Please help Bridger to perform next year so that my friends and I can participate in the robotics competition in 2012. Thank you."

"My favorite part of robotics team was getting to compete with other teams and have a great challenge … Also it’s not one person but it’s the team that gives the best challenge I have ever had in my experience in Lego robotics. The reason why teams win awards is because each person is needed in a great team and I have been lucky having these great teams … This has taught me that engineering is my best thing and not sports. This has helped me choose the career path of what types of jobs I can have. I can tell you this program has changed me for what I might have done and I think it should go on for kids to understand what it is like in engineering and in the future. Please continue this program for other people. Thank you."

"My favorite part of Robotics Team was winning the trophy and being able to go up to claim it with my team … The way we all high-fived the judges as we walked past each of them was something that I will never forget. It made a difference in my life by being able to get along with the people that are the opposite of me. I can say that we didn’t all get along at first, but we became a real team. No, more than a team, a family … We all appreciate what you have done for us, many of us have benefitted from this experience."

"My favorite part of robotics team was working together and making new friends because it was fun to understand and find what they were interested in. It made a difference in my life by helping me learn how to cooperate with others. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to work as a team. I enjoyed expressing my creativity with others."

"My favorite part of robotics team was when we won the trophy for Teamwork and then that just highlighted my time in robotics. The reason is because we won it out of a lot teams. I’m really happy because it’s the first trophy I’ve won for a school activity. I learned that you can have a great time and get work done with each other, even with clashing personalities. I’d love to do this next year … Thank you."

"My favorite part of robotics team was getting to help build the robot. That is so the programmers could program the robot sooner. Thanks for hosting robotics, and I hope you continue it. Thank you."
